Kelvin Sheppard was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Chan Gailey was selected to be a coach in the 2011 Senior Bowl, and got the chance to scout Sheppard for a full week of practices. Obviously Gailey liked what he saw, as many analysts considered Sheppard to be a reach in round 3. Sheppard finished his LSU career as an All-SEC pick, and heralded for his excellent leadership qualities.

In the beginning of training camp in the 2011 season, Sheppard found himself bothered by injuries which halted his progress a bit. Studiously examining the playbook, Sheppard was well-versed in the defense, when Gailey allowed him to see some game action in Week 4. Sheppard looked like a veteran out there, eventually unseating proven LB's Andra Davis and Kirk Morrison, playing inside linebacker along side Nick Barnett. Sheppard will be the Week 1 starter in 2012, and should be at that spot for the next decade. His best game of the season came on Week 14, recording 14 tackles against the San Diego Chargers. With Marcell Dareus, Aaron Williams, and Kelvin Sheppard, the Bills' 2011 draft was a massive success, as their first three picks will be 2012 starters.
